For the first time ever Six Star Speed can offer a standard repair service for OEM RHF5HB turbochargers.  VF34 VF22 and VF36 turbochargers can be repaired with our ceramic dual ball bearing cartridge system.  The VF22 repair includes standard 5/5 blade billet compressor wheel upgrade as detailed below.

RHF5HB turbochargers typically wear seals first, resulting in smoking that can be seen from the exhaust.  Other services simply replace the seals however the actual issue is that the bearings have worn and allowing axial play which is what actually damages the seals. It is then imperative to replace the entire cartridge to restore normal performance and reliability.

Billet Compressor wheel upgrade and Rebuild

Our VF22 repair service includes standard billet wheel compressor upgrade.  The reason is that no suitable cast wheel replacements exists so we decided to offer a performance upgrade. The wheel features a 5/5 blade design similar to OEM but with a smaller hub, thin blades and our customary ETT blade treatment.

Billet Wheel upgrades are optional for VF34 and VF36 in 60 mm 60 trim, and 60 mm 64 trim 7/7 blade compressor wheel options.  

Ceramic ball bearing upgrade

Using our service we can return your failed VF34 VF22 or VF36 turbocharger to better than new condition and performance.  Our ceramic ball bearing upgrade increases responsiveness over the OEM CHRA which has steel balls and plastic cages that degrade over time. Boost handling capacity and longevity are increased with more aggressive bearing preload. This upgrade suits both street and competition applications.

What we do:

  • Complete disassembly and inspection - turbos we receive are identified, marked, and torn down to component level. Each part is inspected for wear and/or damage, and cause of failure is identified.

  • Cleaning and media blasting - Turbine and compressor housings are stripped and refinished. If your housings are specially coated, we clean them with solvents to avoid damage to the coating. 

  • CHRA Replaced - We replace the entire CHRA with new full complement angular contact ball bearings with ceramic balls and 440C Stainless steel ring, new spacers, thrust collar, and seals.  The entire rotating assembly is then balanced as a unit. 

  • Reassembly - Turbo is reassembled with new seal plate, heat shield and fasteners.  All housings are inspected and modified

  • Balancing - All rotating components are two plane balanced and corrected for stack-up imbalance caused by the compressor and thrust parts.  Final balance is by VSR (high speed) machine at up to 150,000 RPM.

  • Optional Coatings –Wrinkle powder coatings are available in black or red, $60 additional.

  • Optional Porting and Polishing - Improve overall performance with the addition of porting and polishing. 

  • Standard Install Kit - Service includes new oil and water pipes, stainless steel braided oil line (oil line adapter for AVCS equipped cars), and new GrimmSpeed 7 layer gaskets for single scroll and OEM 5 layer gaskets for twin scroll applications.

  • Optional Billet compressor wheel upgrades -  Six Star Speed introduces a billet compressor wheel upgrades for RHF5HB frame Subaru turbochargers. We have two sizes for the OEM Ball bearing turbos. The standard billet wheel upgrade features a 60 mm base exducer with 7 tall and 7 short blades, smaller hub and 65 mm extended tips for an over 15% flow increase. The 7/7 blade large trim features a  7% greater inlet area, very quick response and has 42 lb/min flow with a broad map for great performance on both 2 and 2.5 liter engines.  The Time Attack profileVF22/VF28 only) features a larger 62 mm exducer 7/7 blade configuration with 67 mm extended tips, a large 49.6 mm inducer (64 trim) smaller hub  with a capacity of 44 lb/min.

    Purchase the service with your desired options. You can add options such as PnP, actuator upgrades, and coaitngs  to your order and purchase in advance.  
    • Advance purchase reserves your position in the work queue and saves time as we have to confirm requested work and option pricing before work begins.  
    • Make sure to fill out the service form regardless if you pre-order or ship/drop the turbo with us. 
    • If purchasing the turbo outright select the appropriate turbocharger type and applicable core charge.  Outright purchase may add 1-3 weeks to build time depending on availability

    Package your turbo securely. If you are shipping a turbo to us please package it such to avoid damage.  Wastegate actuators are the most vulnerable to damage and are a component of the turbo that will be re-used if in operable condition.  Make sure you have enough cushioning material to guard against the conditions of normal handling.

              Make sure to include the service form or a copy of your purchase receipt. Including the documentation saves time and allows us to get started right away.  We get a lot of turbos in each day.  Turbos received without service requests will unfortunately go to the back of the daily work queue.  Confirming the service request with without the docmentation may add 1-3 working days to the turn around time.  The service form is located here SERVICE FORM DOWNLOAD

    Ship your turbo to us or drop off if you are local When shipping your turbo you may use the courier of your choice.  UPS or FedEx are the most reliable and USPS has the advantage of delivering on Saturdays.  If you are local to Northern VA you can drop off your turbo at  Fairfax Auto Parts Machine Shop 8701 Lee Highway Fairfax VA 22031 7:30 am - 5:00 pm

    Confirmation of receipt and estimated completion time. When we receive your turbo we will confirm arrival and update the system to show the estimated completion time.  If you dropped or shipped the turbo to us without a pre-order we will contact you by phone or email to confirm details, service request, pricing and lead time.

    Completion and return shipping. When your turbo order is complete the system will be updated with tracking details and a message sent to you.  Tracking numbers are usually live by 8 pm on the shipping day.  For turbos without a pre-order invoices and payment will be processed before the turbo ships and tracking numbers sent by email.

    Receipt and installation.  Your turbo will ship to you complete and ready to install with documentation of guidelines and instructions.  Please follow them to the letter.  We always recommend professional installation of turbochargers.


All Six Star Speed labor products include a 2 year limited warranty for workmanship defects. 

Basic service charge applies to a turbocharger in serviceable condition. Serviceable condition requires that the unit does not have a broken turbine shaft or turbine housing damaged by foreign object debris such as melted aluminum. Turbochargers received with unserviceable damage will be given the option to purchase the service parts at the listed prices or have the unit returned. Refunds will be issued for returned unserviceable turbochargers minus a $90.00 inspection and shipping fee.
